SMART Act Conference Call for Public Entity Risk Pools

There will be a conference call briefing on the SMART Act specifically for persons involved with public entity pools at 3 pm Eastern time, Tuesday, April 19.  The call will feature David Farber, with Patton Boggs, LLP, who is representing the Medicare Advocacy Recovery Coalition (MARC) in presenting this legislation before Congress.  AGRiP, along with the National League of Cities Risk Sharing Consortium (NLC RISC) and the California Association of Joint Powers Authorities (CAJPA) are each involved in MARC.

H.R. 1063 - The Strengthening Medicare and Repaying Taxpayers (SMART Act) has been introduced to make needed changes to the Medicare Secondary Payer system.  Under the current MSP system, Medicare beneficiaries and third parties are having significant problems settling claims, because they cannot determine the amount owed to Medicare in a timely manner.  This situation wastes limited judicial and other resources and needlessly delays settlements.  Further, the current system causes significant confusion for beneficiaries, places an unreasonable burden on businesses around the country, and ultimately limits the return of dollars owed to the Medicare Trust Fund.
